What Parents Need to Know About CMS Magnet Options

So the beginning of a new year is here and it may only be halfway through the academic year, but it’s time for the CMS magnet lottery. While there are 3 rounds of magnet lotteries offered, to ensure a space in the magnet school of your choice, it is important to enter the 1st round of applications. The first round closes on January 25!

Important dates to know to ensure your child is admitted into the lottery for a magnet school for the 2016-2017 academic year are:

Student Assignment Notification letters begin arriving in homes:   first week of December 2015

This is the letter to explain  they are currently attending unless they are aging out ( elementary to middle, middle to high).

Keep this letter, the letter contains your child’s SID and pin. The SID is the school ID number. It is how your child is identified in CMS and is required to complete an application for the magnet lottery. Middle and high school students will probably know this number. For some elementary students, check their name tag, the SID may be found there, or on their powerschool page screen. The pin is located on the letter or is available by calling your child’s current school. The pin is, also, necessary to complete the lottery application.

Who gets a priority in the magnet lottery?

The lottery is used to assign students to school options programs. The lottery runs on the following priorities:

1. Students who live within the designated Magnet Proximity Area of a whole magnet school (typically a 1⁄3 mile radius around the school).

2. Students who live in the magnet transportation zone will be admitted in order of lottery number, so long as the maximum number of students admitted from any one elementary home school is proportional to the total number of potential applicants in the transportation zone.

3. All students who live in a magnet transportation zone will be admitted in order of lottery number.

4. All students who live outside the magnet transportation zone will be admitted in order of lottery number (transportation will not be provided)
